The Problem with Aged Asphalt

Oxidation, water and traffic cause asphalt to lose flexibility, crack and fail — leading to higher costs, disruption and frustrated communities.

Oxidation

Bitumen dries out and hardens over time.

Cracking

Brittle surfaces develop micro and macro cracks.

Water Damage

Water penetrates, weakens and accelerates failure.

Traffic Stress

More cracks and potholes increase maintenance.

Budget Pressure

Reactive spending leads to escalating costs.

The Renew a Road Difference

A solvent-based rejuvenator that penetrates and reconditions the existing bitumen.

1

Penetrates

Seeps through microcracks and the surface layer.

2

Reconditions

Rebalances asphaltenes, maltenes and paraffins to restore flexibility and ductility.

3

Protects

Seals the surface, restores hydrophobic properties and retards further oxidation.

Hydrophobic surface

Water beads and runs off.

Seals microcracks

Prevents water ingress and crack propagation.

Quick drying

Traffic ready in as little as 2.5 hours.

Long-lasting results

4–6 years of extended performance.

Up to 4× more cost-effective than conventional asphalt overlay

Renew a Road offers a preventative asphalt rejuvenation solution that can cost significantly less than traditional resurfacing or reconstruction, depending on site condition, preparation requirements, surface area and location.

Why it matters
  • Preventative — applied before failure
  • Trafficable in approximately 2.5 hours*
  • Minimal site disruption
  • Helps extend the life of existing asphalt
  • Reduces the need for costly reconstruction

Conventional Asphalt Overlay

Traditional overlay and reconstruction methods typically require milling, paving, curing and extended traffic disruption. Renew a Road helps asset owners preserve existing asphalt for longer before major intervention is required.

  • Milling, paving and curing required
  • Significant traffic disruption
  • Higher material and embedded-carbon impact

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions engineers, municipalities and property managers ask most often.

How long does asphalt rejuvenation last?
Documented field performance for maltene-based rejuvenation typically extends pavement service life by around 4 to 7 years per treatment, depending on traffic loading, UV exposure and base condition. The exact interval for any South African surface depends on a condition assessment and local environmental factors — our technical team can advise after a site evaluation.
What condition does asphalt need to be in for rejuvenation to work?
Rejuvenation is most effective on surfaces showing moderate oxidation — grey surface colouration, early surface microcracking and surface hardening that typically appear several years after paving. The pavement must still be structurally sound, with no base failure or deep structural cracking. Surfaces already exhibiting ravelling, potholing or sub-base failure are not candidates for rejuvenation and require rehabilitation first. A pavement condition assessment is the first step.
Is asphalt rejuvenation suitable for municipal roads?
Yes. Rejuvenation suits municipal road networks because it supports a network-level preservation strategy — treating structurally sound roads before they require expensive rehabilitation, and so stretching limited maintenance budgets further. Engineers can integrate it into road asset management programmes as a scheduled preventative treatment, typically on a multi-year cycle following condition assessment.
How does asphalt rejuvenation compare in cost to resurfacing?
Rejuvenation is significantly less expensive than a hot-mix asphalt overlay or full resurfacing. While exact costs depend on surface area, condition and access, it typically costs a fraction of a conventional resurfacing programme for the same area. Applied at the right point in the deterioration cycle, it can defer resurfacing by several years — delivering additional serviceable life at a fraction of the cost of rehabilitation. All figures are indicative and subject to a site assessment.
Does asphalt rejuvenation require specialised equipment or lengthy road closures?
No. The process is spray-applied and does not require hot-mix equipment, milling machines or heavy plant. Application is typically completed in a single session and most surfaces are trafficable within hours (approximately 2.5 hours, conditions-dependent). By comparison, conventional resurfacing usually involves milling, paving and extended curing — often multi-day closures. This makes rejuvenation valuable where minimising disruption matters: commercial properties, logistics hubs, airports and busy urban roads.
