Technical Testing & Validation
Municipal and consulting engineers require evidence, not adjectives: laboratory data, field performance records, and a methodology they can scrutinise. Here is how the technology is evaluated.
The testing framework
Rejuvenation performance is evaluated through established binder property tests that provide a pre- and post-treatment comparison of the bitumen's characteristics:
- Penetration (ASTM D5) — change in binder hardness after treatment.
- Ductility (ASTM D113) — recovery of binder flexibility.
- Viscosity (ASTM D4957) — binder consistency pre/post treatment.
- Field condition scoring — Pavement Condition Index (PCI) or Visual Condition Index (VCI).
Our technical documentation includes both laboratory binder test data and field performance results, available on request for technical evaluation.
Field evidence: the Tennant Road trial
A trial section on Tennant Road (City of Cape Town) has been in service since October 2024 and monitored since application. Core samples inspected at 20× magnification showed enriched black mastic beneath the treated surface, supporting observed penetration and water-inhibiting performance. Treated samples compared favourably against conventional sealcoat in the inspected cores. Observations are reported as found — conditions-dependent and subject to site assessment.
Standards alignment
In South Africa, asphalt rejuvenation technology is evaluated against guidelines published by Agrément South Africa, the country's primary fitness-for-purpose certification body for innovative construction products. The South African Transport Conference (SATC) has published evaluation frameworks specifically for asphalt surface rejuvenators used in the local roads industry. Renew a Road's product and application protocol are designed to align with these local evaluation standards and with international reference frameworks from the FHWA, Austroads and the Asphalt Institute.
